The maqui berry is the fruit of an evergreen plant (Aristotelia chilensis) native to Chile and Argentina. To withstand the extreme Patagonian climate, the plant produces special antioxidant molecules. These antioxidant compounds protect the plant from intense sunlight.

The blue color of the maqui berry comes from anthocyanins, compounds with powerful antioxidant properties. What makes this plant particularly special is that its anthocyanin content is several times higher than that of other blue-colored berries. RUTIN, also known as RUTOSIDE, is a bioflavonoid found in nature, mainly in fruits. It was first isolated in pure form by Albert Szent-Györgyi to study its vitamin C-supporting properties.
